TCFE Website: Continuing the European Internal Arts Legacy

27 June, 2025

The Taijiquan and Qigong Federation for Europe (TCFE) website has been changed, marking a continuation of the federation's work that began in 1996. After the original foundation ceased operations in 2019, Stichting Taijiquan Nederland (STN) has taken the initiative to maintain the federation's presence and goals.

Connecting individual practitioners and organizations across Europe while preserving the diversity of different styles and traditions within Taijiquan, Qigong, and other Chinese internal arts.

Website TCFE

23 June, 2025

Stichting Taijiquan Nederland (STN) is pleased to announce that we have successfully gained access to the original TCFE-website. This important milestone in our mission to revive the spirit of the TCFE would not have been possible without the generous assistance and dedication of Stephen Thirlwell, John Johnston and Cornelia Gruber.

With access to this valuable digital heritage now restored, STN continues its efforts to reconnect schools and practitioners who share the founding goals of the original TCFE. The website will serve as a bridge between the Federation's rich history and its promising future under STN's stewardship.

Dan Docherty

In Memoriam: Dan Docherty

9 December, 2021

Dan Docherty, also known as the Tai Chi Gladiator, passed away at the age of 67 on December 9, 2021, at his home in London. His death was not unexpected but still rippled like a shock throughout the international Tai Chi community.

Dan was a globally renowned Taiji teacher and co-founder of the TCFE (Taijiquan and Qigong Federation for Europe). He taught workshops, authored several books on Taijiquan, and was invited to various STN events over the years.

Born in Glasgow in 1954, he grew up in a large Scottish Catholic family. He studied law, practiced karate, and served as an inspector in the Hong Kong Police Force. There, he studied under Cheng Tin-Hung, whose style became known as "Practical Tai Chi Chuan."

He registered that system under the same name and soon competed successfully in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. In 1984, he moved to London to teach Tai Chi, later establishing schools across Europe, Israel, Russia, Asia, and the U.S.

He co-founded the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain in 1991 and helped launch the Tai Chi Federation for Europe in 1997. Known for his strong will, he often took an autocratic role within these organizations.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012, Dan met the illness with remarkable strength. He continued teaching, traveling, and giving workshops, even via Zoom during the pandemic. He lived independently until the end, in what his students called "Docherty Towers."
